Abstract

This paper addresses the structuring of an Environmental Management System (EMS) based on the ISO 14001:2015 standard for hostels, with the aim of improving brand positioning and minimizing the environmental impact of their operations. The importance of the tourism sector to the economy and the need to implement sustainable practices in tourist accommodations are recognized. The main objective was to develop an EMS that would allow hostels to obtain environmental certification and its associated benefits. The methodology employed combined non-experimental, descriptive, projective, and field research, with data collection through document analysis and direct consultation with tourist accommodations. The initial state of legal and documentary compliance with the ISO 14001:2015 standard and applicable national environmental legislation was evaluated, which allowed for the identification of a need to structure an environmental management system from scratch. Subsequently, the elements necessary for the development of the Environmental Management System were defined, including the minimum required procedures and documentation (environmental policy, operational processes, and audit plans). The Environmental Management System (EMS) is important because it reflects the organization's commitment to responsible environmental management, contributing to improved environmental performance, compliance with current environmental regulations, and continuous improvement. This design helps strengthen the competitiveness of accommodations and promote sustainable practices in the local tourism sector.
