Abstract

The consumption of sugars is a phenomenon that has been increasing significantly in the world and in our country in particular. This increase has been produced by the development of the food industry that offers a wide range of processed products with a high content of free sugars. The objective of this research was to investigate the problems posed by the consumption of free sugars in human health and the development of potential long-term pathologies. A bibliographic review was carried out in the main databases of articles related to the health area, inclusion criteria were established for the review of the bibliography, and a total of 48 sources were obtained to investigate. The main results found were: the health danger of consuming free sugars (fructose, glucose, and sucrose), the consumption of carbohydrates is necessary in a balanced diet, provided that they are part of the food matrix and not in a free form. The main pathologies that can be derived from the consumption of this type of sugar are: obesity, diabetes, arterial hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, non-alcoholic fatty liver, increased triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, cavities and cancer. The deterioration in the quality of life of children, youth and adults, as well as the investment demanded by health systems to attend the growing number of patients with diseases derived from sugar consumption, is a public health problem that must be addressed in quick way.
