Abstract

In palliative care, assertive communication when delivering bad news influences how the situation is faced. This study analyzed assertive communication of bad news in patients and families receiving palliative care. A literature search was conducted on six databases such as PubMed, DialNet, SciELO, Mendeley, Elsevier, and Redalyc. The results revealed that patients want to know their diagnoses. Opportune and assertive information reduces physical and psychological symptoms, enabling them to make informed decisions about their treatment, prognosis, and family future. The main communication barriers include limited time, space, and how to deliver the message, service breakdowns, requests for non-disclosure, and lack of preparation. It was concluded that the communication of bad news should be empathetic, honest, and assertive, ensuring that the information has been understood and seeking positive effects on the patient, family, and professionals.
